Trees. Flowers. Plants.
Stuff that most of you see every single day of your lives. They should be
relatively harmless right? Compared to all the stuff you've been reading
on this site? THINK AGAIN! There are some Asian superstitions regarding trees and the other citizens of your lawn, believe it or not. Some are said to bring bad luck, while others are said to be connected to a supernatural being of some kind. Read on to find out more! Can you find any of them in your garden...? The page may take a while to load. Sorry about that. |

Banana Tree The banana tree is said to be the home of a Pontianak. You are supposedly able to control a Pontianak resident in a particular tree by sticking a needle threaded with red string into the tree, and tying the end of the string to the foot of you bed. The said Pontianak would then be forced to do all that you command, albeit reluctantly. (Please do not try this at home. Dabbling with the supernatural has proven to be dangerous and WILL complicate your life. You have been warned.) |

Vines When a tree (usually a big, ancient looking tree) has vines hnging down from its branches, looking almost like hair, this tree is believed to be home to a Penunggu. When something unusual or supernatural has happened, some are usually quick to blame this type of tree and hence, the tree would be cut down. |

Frangipani Walking late at night, if you smell the scent of frangipani flowers, watch out! The smell, often followed by the stench of rotting meat, is the sign that a Pontianak is nearby. The Malay name for this flower is Bunga (Flower) Kemboja. |

Chrysanthemum Some Japanese believe that if you plant this flower in your garden, the ghost of Okiku will be summoned and she would then proceed to haunt you. And having a ghost wailing and sobbing every night probably isn't anyone's idea of fun... Note that there are a lot of different kinds of chrysanthemums. Not sure if its specific to one type of flower. |

Bamboo The bamboo plant, sole food of the Giant Panda, is the centre of Asian superstition. Some people believe that in the middle of every clump of bamboo trees lives a spirit, usually a Penunggu for the Malays. The thicker the group, the more evil the spirit. On a side note, the trunks of bamboo trees secrete something that makes your skin itchy, so it probably isn't a good idea to go into the middle of the clump anyway. |

Weeping Willow The Asian superstition surrounding the Weeping Willow is particularly strange as this is technically a tree from the West. The Weeping Willow, with all its branches and leaves pointing downwards, is said to bring bad luck to those who plant it in their gardens. Weeping willows are able to grow in the tropics as well, but their appearance is slightly different, though the branches still point downwards. |
